Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic and distressing mental health condition characterized by a cycle of obsessions and time-consuming compulsions. Obsessions are intrusive, persistent, and distressing thoughts, images, or urges that individuals cannot control that may interrupt daily life.
Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that a person feels compelled to perform in response to the obsessions. These compulsions are intended to reduce the distress caused by the obsessions or to prevent a feared event or situation. However, compulsions typically offer only temporary relief and can become time-consuming and disruptive to daily life.

Common Symptoms of OCD Include:
Obsessions: Examples of obsessions can range from fears of contamination, harm coming to oneself or others, or fears of wrongdoing. These obsessions can lead to intense anxiety or discomfort, making it challenging for those struggling with obsessions to focus on their responsibilities, friendships, and relationships.
Compulsions: Compulsions may include rituals like excessive handwashing, checking, counting, and repeating certain actions, or mental rituals like silently repeating words or phrases. With OCD, compulsions don’t feel like an option, and individuals tend to feel an intense need to give in to their compulsions to feel safe.
OCD can affect people of all ages, from children to adults, and it can develop gradually or suddenly. Research shows that it often begins in adolescence or early adulthood, but it can also occur in childhood or later in adulthood.
OCD and related disorders can have a profound impact on a person’s daily life, relationships, and overall well-being. Left untreated, OCD can lead to severe functional impairment and may even result in depression or other mental health issues.
However, with appropriate treatment, including therapy, medication, or a combination of both, individuals with OCD and related disorders can experience significant improvement in their symptoms and quality of life. Early intervention is crucial to managing the condition effectively and preventing it from becoming more severe over time.
Guided by mental health and medical professionals, Cedar Hill’s behavioral health programs provide the utmost level of care and support for individuals struggling with OCD and co-occurring disorders. Our services can effectively treat OCD, and life-changing psychological services can instill a new sense of hope and joy in clients.

How are OCD and Related Disorders Diagnosed?
Upon admission to our treatment facilities, a licensed mental health professional will perform a full evaluation of each individual’s mental health symptoms, history, and experience. OCD will be diagnosed when the individual exhibits patterns or behaviors that fit the diagnostic criteria of obsessive-compulsive disorder or related disorders.
The initial assessment is a crucial step in treatment planning, as ocd treatments may differ depending on the severity of the condition, the duration of symptoms, and the presence of any co-occurring disorders. It’s common for clients to begin treatment while having a previous diagnosis of OCD, but our mental health professionals will still guide each client through the entire evaluation to ensure proper diagnosis.
OCD can share similarities with other mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders and certain tic disorders. Our trained clinicians can consider all conditions and effectively differentiate OCD from them to ensure diagnosis is accurate. If there are other psychological illnesses present, such as eating disorders or bipolar disorders, treatment plans will address all conditions.
OCD Treatment Massachusetts
At Cedar Hill, our commitment to offering exceptional treatment options for OCD and related disorders is unwavering. We specialize in treatment for OCD, and related disorders such as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), Tourettes Syndrome, and chronic tic syndrome. Our facilities integrate a diverse range of high-quality treatment programs, expert clinicians, and ongoing clinical research to ensure that we deliver the highest standard of care.
Patient care begins with a comprehensive evaluation at the time of admission, which allows our treatment team to craft personalized treatment plans tailored to each individual’s unique needs and symptoms. While clinical services and specific treatment programs will vary, future patients diagnosed with OCD can anticipate participation in a variety of our behavioral therapy approaches, including:
Individual Therapy
Behavioral therapy is a cornerstone of OCD treatment. Under the guidance of our trained mental health professionals, clients engage in evidence-based therapeutic approaches designed to address obsessions and compulsions. These clinical services empower individuals to manage and alleviate obsessive thoughts, reduce compulsive behaviors, and enhance their overall quality of life.
Our mental health professionals may use approaches from cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) or dialectical behavioral therapy(DBT), and exposure and response prevention to work on emotional control, response prevention, and other aspects of recovery. In addition, these sessions will prompt individuals to explore their personal goals for mental health and beyond, ensuring a holistic approach to recovery.
Group Therapy Sessions
Structured group therapy, led by our experienced mental health providers, offers a communal setting for individuals with OCD. These sessions focus on emotional control, healthy coping skills, education, and mutual support, fostering a sense of connection among participants who share similar experiences. They are extremely beneficial to clients suffering from OCD or other mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression and challenge individuals to see new perspectives on life’s challenges.
Family Therapy
With permission from the client, family members may be involved in patient care planning and therapy sessions. OCD can have a significant impact on interpersonal relationships, and educating family members on their loved one’s condition and experience can help build healthy dynamics that will support individuals in their recovery process. Cedar Hill recognizes the importance of family member involvement in the overall recovery process and will work closely with clients to integrate them to a level they feel comfortable with.
Medication Management
The symptoms of OCD and related disorders can often be severe and overwhelming, and many clients can benefit from medication assistance to alleviate acute symptoms and stabilize their condition while working on their mental health. Our team of nurse practitioners and medical professionals are trained and experienced in prescribing and managing medication for mental health treatment.
Our staff has high-level training in prescribing medication for all levels of OCD and related disorders, including treatment-resistant OCD. Medication management is an important aspect of OCD treatment, and regular meetings will be held between clients and staff to ensure treatment is progressing and medications are effective for each individual’s treatment goals.
For clients with co-occurring conditions including anxiety disorders, depression, and other mood disorders, medication management will address all conditions to ensure an effective and smooth treatment plan.
Support Groups
Our treatment programs provide an adequate level and length of care, with comprehensive support from registered nurses, social workers, and medical professionals. However, we recognize the importance of external psychological services to aid in long-term recovery. Our aftercare planning incorporates connections to support groups and other resources for clients who wish to participate in additional support once treatment is completed. When necessary,
